In the historic Entrevías neighbourhood, adjacent to Madrid’s M-30 motorway, this comprehensive renovation project is located in one of the traditional terraced houses that are representative of the buildings in this legendary working-class neighbourhood. The semi-detached house, spread over two floors, is made up of two volumes: the original construction of around 50m2 and a later annex that adds another 20m2 around a patio. The renovation replaces some of the original load-bearing walls with a slender metal structure that frees up the floor and allows for greater coherence between the two existing blocks. Ceramic tiles become the protagonist of this single-family home, a grid of ceramic tiles unifies the rooms throughout the house and a series of lattices of the same material act as a visual filter.
The façade maintains the original character of the elevation of the street by adding a ceramic lattice skin to the two existing openings announcing the new language of the interior. The finishes of the metallic elements in wine red contrast with the matte Catalan ceramics. The bathroom on the first floor uses this same reddish finish, where a monolithic sink tiled in porcelain mosaic becomes the protagonist of this hinge space between the bedroom and the rest of the floor. The façade opens to the interior with floor-to-ceiling openings, balconies on the first floor maintaining the same finish as the exterior façade.
The double-height opening that houses the new metal staircase is finished with a 5.6m high ceramic lattice that frames the back of the living room. The kitchen is visually separated from this room with an additional floor-to-ceiling lattice.
The proposal proposes to integrate the house into the neighborhood without altering its identity, highlighting the renovation of the neighborhood without modifying the character of the context. A new language for the preservation of Entrevías.
